The demise of small-scale dairy farming over the past three decades has led to the pastoral abandonment of the majority of bog turtle habitats in the Northeast. As a consequence, habitats are being degraded by the growth of invasive flora, changes in hydrology, and the loss of turtle microhabitats created by livestock.

The Three Mountain Alliance (TMA) is a watershed partnership that was formed in 2007 and encompasses 1,116,300 acres, or 45%, of Hawaiʻi Island.
With 11 partners, the overall goal of TMA is to sustain the multiple ecosystem benefits of the three mountains of Kīlauea, Mauna Loa, and Hualālai by being responsible stewards of its watershed areas, native habitats and species, historical, cultural, and socio-economic resources for all who benefit from the continued health of the three mountains.

The citizens of the Smith River Rancheria are a nation of Dee-ni' known today as the Tolowa Dee-ni'. They are governed under the Smith River Rancheria as a Federally Recognized Nation. Their Administration Office named the K'vsh-chu Administration Building is located in Smith River, California in the Pacific Northwest.
Their Taa-laa-waa-dvn (Tolowa-Ancestral-Land) lays along the Pacific Coast between the watersheds of; Wilson Creek and Smith River in California and the Winchuck, Chetco, Pistol, Rogue, Elk and Sixes Rivers, extending inland up the Rogue River throughout the Applegate Valley in Oregon.
